Sunny Niyomugabo has been appointed as the new Patriots head coach. He succeeded Henry Mwinuka, who departed the club after two seasons to take over as the head coach of Tigers.

The former Patriots player had been serving as an assistant coach for more than a year at the 2021 BAL semifinalist.

“We are beyond excited to announce that Coach SUNNY NIYOMUGABO, who has been a pivotal figure in Patriots Basketball Club from day one, is stepping into a new role as our Head Coach,” the club said in a statement on Thursday, 23 January.

“As the first captain of Patriots Basketball Club, Coach Sunny has exemplified the values we hold…..his journey with us has come full circle, and we couldn't be prouder to have him lead us into the future.”

Niyomugabo said he is committed to pushing Patriots to its fullest potential and making history with them. “Basketball is not just a sport to me; it's a way of life, it's an honour to return to the Patriots in this new role.”

Patriots emphasized that they are confident that Niyomugabo will lead them to greater heights

“His journey from captain to coach embodies the core values of our club and shows the power of leadership, dedication, and vision.”

They will kick off their 2024-25 league season, facing newly-promoted AZOMCO on Friday, 24 January, at LDK Gymnasium.

Patriots, who were the first Rwandan club that took part in the Basketball Africa League (BAL), last won the Rwanda Basketball League title in 2020.
