Rwanda men's national football team have parted company with head coach Frank Torsten Spittler.

Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) announced on Tuesday night, 21 January, that the decision comes after lengthy discussions with the 63-year-old German coach.

"We inform all Rwandans, particularly football fans, that after various talks with Mr Torsten Frank Spittler, who was the head coach of the Amavubi national team, it was decided not to extend his employment contract," FERWAFA said in a statement on 21 January.

FERWAFA added that they "will, soon, announce a coach to take over as head coach of the national team."

Early in December 2024, Torsten Spittler returned to his home in Germany for the festive season, following the expiration of his one-year contract with Amavubi. He had not even coached the CHAN 2024 Qualifying matches against South Sudan.

FERWAFA had started negotiations to extend Torsten Spittler's contract in late December 2024 as the federation President, Alphonse Munyantwali told B&B Kigali.

At the time Munyantwali told B&B Kigali that some of Torsten Spittler’s decisions are not supported by the federation, including the choice to omit players like Hakim Sahabo, Rafael York, and Muhadjiri Hakizimana from Amavubi.

He added that they would part ways rather than interfere in the German coach's decision should they find that his desires do not align with theirs.

Torsten Spittler was appointed Amavubi head coach on 1 November 2023, replacing Carlos Alós Ferrer, who had resigned. It was his first spell as a senior national team's head coach.

Excluding friendlies, in his 12 games as Rwanda's head coach, Torsten Spittler had five wins, three draws, and four losses.
