Rwanda suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat to South Sudan in the first leg of the second round of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) Qualifiers, which took place at Juba National Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Amavubi had the advantage in ball possession and created several big chances for most of the game, but they were inefficient in front of the Bright Stars goal.
Aimable Nsabimana's howler in the 13th minute gave South Sudan a lead as the defender scored an own goal while attempting a head pass to goalkeeper Gad Muhawenayo. Stephen Malish Mandela doubled the advantage seven minutes later with an incredible volley from outside the box as the home team took a 2-0 lead at the half-time break.
Jimmy Mulisa's men started the second half quickly, with Kevin Muhire pulling one back only four minutes after the break following Arsene Tuyisenge's effort.
Ebon Malish Ezibon extended the lead for Nicolas Dupuis's side, with a fine header in the 53rd minute.
Didier Mugisha, who replaced Olivier Dushimimana, reduced the deficit in the 66th minute. He cut inside the box from the right and struck the ball past South Sudan goalkeeper Juma Amuk.
Despite creating numerous clear-cut scoring opportunities, Amavubi were kept at bay by the Bright Stars for the rest of the game as the hosts secured a 3-2 victory.
The second leg is set for 28 December at Amahoro Stadium.
